Description
FROM THE PERFECTION COLLECTION OF CAPPED BUST HALF DOLLARS Ex Eliasberg, as noted on the insert. One of the FINEST KNOWN 1815 half dollars that exists boasting the greatest of all classic numismatic pedigrees: Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. The 1815/2 is the classic date to the series, all 47,150 examples were produced from a single pair of dies, and most of these went into circulation. Hours after the mint delivered the entire mintage to the cashier, one of the buildings on the mint complex, which housed the machinery to roll silver and gold planchets burned to the ground and would take until 1817 for the mint to be able to strike any gold or silver coins again. The economic aftermath of the War of 1812 caused the mintage to plummet from over a million in 1814 to the 47,150 struck late in 1815, and in an effort to save expensive die steal, a left over 1812 die was repunched with a 5 creating the 1815/2 overdate. Since no half dollars were struck in 1816, the majority of 1815 went into circulation and the typical example is moderately to heavily worn. The present Eliasberg O-101a, sits at the top of the Herrman listing, called "MS65" as it was in the April 1997 sale of the Eliasberg Collection. Deeply and richly toned, described as "Frosty silver gray surfaces display hints of light gold and electric blue around the borders." The frosted, satiny underlying brilliance brings the variegated hues to life and accents the sharply struck devices. This lovely GEM was struck from a doubly clashed pair of dies and some thin die cracks, including the one that encircles the entire reverse. The surfaces are generally clean and the only mark we feel is worthy of mention is a single minor depression just off the eagle's beak, which serves as a pedigree marker for the coin, always linking it to the AMAZING Eliasberg cabinet. The eye appeal is truly amazing! Ex Chapman Brothers, January 1900; J.M. Clapp; John H. Clapp; Clapp Estate, en bloc, to Louis E. Eliasberg, via Stack's in 1942; Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection; Bowers & Merena/Stack's sale of the Eliasberg Collection, Part II, April 1997, lot 1733; unknown intermediaries; Harry Laibstain, by private sale after August 2016 to Mr. Perfection. PCGS 5, NGC 6, CAC 4. There are two in MS64+ at PCGS, and we were blessed to sell the other example in our September 2021 sale of the Green-Newman-Chicago coin for $109,688. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $125,000. Just the Dunham-Hawn-Noblet-Pogue-O'Neal MS65 and the Kaufman-Link MS66 are graded finer at PCGS. This is a VERY RARE and important opportunity that cannot be missed by the advanced Capped Bust half collector and worthy of a very strong bid. We would not be surprised if this coin realized a record price for the grade. Good luck. Cert. Number 33272225 PCGS # 6108
