Lead 50C 1807 LARGE STARS, 50/20. O-112. PCGS MS65
THE SAN DIEGO COLLECTION What an AMAZING way to start off this world class date set of Lettered Edge Capped Bust half dollars! This is truly a spectacular example of this very popular first year of this extremely popular design type. In 1807, Robert Scot's Draped Bust design was replaced by John Reich's Capped Bust design. Four die pairings were utilized to strike 750,500 half dollars of this new design. The first two, O-111 and O-112 shared a common reverse, one where the engraver improperly placed the denomination, starting out punching a 2, and in noticing the error, punched the proper 5 over it. The obverse die for O-111 quickly broke, with a dramatic die break that created the famed Bearded Goddess variety. The obverse of O-112, was more prolific, and was used to strike many coins. Of the four die pairs of 1807 Capped Bust varieties, the O-112 is the most common, listed as Rarity-1. However, this GEM is tied for FINEST graded at PCGS, and ranks at the top of the Overton-Parsley Census; indeed, this coin ranks with the Vermeule-Pogue example at the top of the PCGS Population Report. The surfaces are aglow in a vivid, brilliant mint luster, with swirling cartwheels that bring out the beautiful pale golden central obverse, deepening to a richer tangerine and coppery-golden coloration. Hints of of violet-blue fold over the extreme peripheries to the reverse and and then fade to a soft golden tinged pearly-silver. The devices show full crispness of strike from an exacting blow from the dies. Struck from an intermediate state of the dies with light clash marks and the dies beginning to show stress in the fields. A strong glass reveals a couple of tiny ticks, mostly hidden and mentioned only for accuracy; they have zero impact on the outstanding visual allure of this true GEM quality example. Ex Heritage, June 2004, lot 6075; Heritage, July 2004, lot 6451; Dale Friend Collection; our consignor, via private treaty sale, October 2018, for $140,000. PCGS 4, NGC 2. As noted, this coin sold via private treaty in 2018 for $140,000--a significant premium over what the Pogue coin brought in September 2015, which at $129,250 is an auction record. In today's market, we expect that this coin will bring well above the current published levels. Whether you are a collector of type coins, GEM Capped Bust Halves, or just putting together a box of twenty, this GEM is a SUPERB choice and will delight any collector. Who knows when another might reappear on the market! Do not let this opportunity pass you by! Cert. Number 46263190 PCGS # 39356
