S-166. EX NAFTZGER-REYNOLDS. What an awesome early large cent! One of the worst kept secrets in all of numismatics is how much the principles at our sister company, Legend Numismatics, loves high end copper, and this coin is one that would appeal to even the pickiest of collectors.
First, the luster swirls on satin smooth surfaces. Even medium brown shows hints of a lighter golden tone in areas. The strike is razor sharp throughout. Even with a strong glass, we cannot find a single spot or stain that would distract, but tiny abrasion is noted in front of Liberty’s bust. The obverse die was slightly misaligned shifting the design up towards 1:00. Struck from clashed dies, and the reverse has a heavy die crack that goes from E in UNITED through the wreath and arcs down to about 6:00.
The extensive pedigree is as impressive as the physical qualities. Beckwith Collection (Chapman, April 1923, lot 17); Henry Hines; Dr. William Sheldon; Roy “Ted” Naftzger; Eric Streiner; Denis Loring; John MacDonald; Tom Reynolds Collection (Goldberg’s, January 2016, lot 162) at $18,212. This near GEM is ranked among the finest, and depending on which census you follow, it falls somewhere between CC#1 and CC#5; it is also plated in several of the major references on early cents.
PCGS 7, NGC 1, CAC 5. For the 2nd Hair Style type, only 3 are finer in the BN color designation, none are CAC approved. This well preserved coin will serve wonderfully in an advanced type or date set. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $50,000. We think whoever purchases this near-GEM will have as hard a time putting it down as we have!
