Description |
A superlative GEM, among the absolute finest known of this early New Orleans issue. The surfaces are silky smooth, even using a strong glass we cannot locate a single distracting feature. The devices are RAZOR sharp, each fold in Ms. Liberty’s gown, every stripe in the shield, every strand of hair, every finger, etc on the obverse and every leaf on the reverse wreath are fully embossed by a forceful and exacting blow from the dies. A delicate pearlescent lilac tone drapes the peripheral devices, leaving the centers either untoned, or with a subtle dusting of clear gold. The brilliant, satiny, nearly cartwheel textured luster really shines and brings the subtle color to life and adds depth to the chiseled devices. The quality of this coin is unusual for an early New Orleans issue, which often come somewhat crude in nature.
PCGS 3, NGC 1, CAC 2. The finest graded at PCGS is a solitary MS67, which has never been sold in auction. Prior to this coin selling in the recent 2016 ANA auction, the only PCGS MS67 was a colorful coin that sold in January 2008 for a whopping $35,650. Since that coin has yet to reappear on the market, this is likely the finest that the advanced collector will be able to add to their cabinet. The current PCGS value is listed at $37,500. While the recent drop in the market for Seated type coins has brought the values of these wonderful coins to more reasonable levels, we feel that coins like this will not be sluggish for long, and NOW is the time to put great coins like this away for the long term.
