Description |
Wow, this SUPERB GEM is incredible. How did a dime, struck during a period of American history that was rife with economic and socio-political ups and downs survive in such an astonishing grade? Whether it was intentional or by pure happenstance, the numismatic community is lucky to be able to enjoy this virtually perfect coin. Essentially as struck, the luster is vibrant and frosty with much satin bloom. Save for a touch of golden accents, this coin is as silvery as it was at the second it came off the die. Well struck, all of the details are boldly embossed into the planchet. Using a strong glass, all we see are some planchet lines and die clash marks, which are both products of manufacture and do not affect the grade.
Because of the massive amounts of gold pouring out of the California gold fields, the proportion of gold/siver in commerce became unbalanced and the price of silver, relative to gold increased to the point where the content of silver coins was worth more than their stated values. Congress changed the weights of these coins, and the new composition was denoted by arrows placed at the date. Before this change went into effect, only 95,000 dimes were struck using the No Arrows dies.
PCGS 4, NGC 5. This is the James Lull Collection coin, which sold in January 2005 for $16,675. Since then, two PCGS-graded examples have sold for $18,800. The current PCGS Price Guide value is $26,000. This would make for a great example for a SUPERB type set, and will be a stand out in such a set.
