Lead | $1 1892-S PCGS MS67 CAC EX ELIASBERG-CORONET |
Description |
One of the most famous condition rarities of the Morgan dollar series. Any Mint State 92-S is a major rarity, and the higher up the grading scale you go, the harder they are to find. This MAGNIFICENT SUPEB GEM is the second finest known, and a real prize for any specialist. Not only is the quality all there, and then some, the Eliasberg-Coronet pedigree should speak for itself in terms of quality, eye appeal, and prestige.
Listed as lot 2290 in the April 1997 sale of the Eliasberg Collection, and described as: "MS67 or finer. An incredible specimen, breathtaking in its beauty and unsurpassed in its appeal. Delicate champagne toning over satiny, lustrous surfaces change to splashes of gold and blue at the rims. One of the keys to the Morgan dollar series, in Mint State, and one of the very rarest at this 'impossible' level. An American numismatic landmark."
Today, 20 years later, the coin is just as spectacular! The luster swirls over the velvety surfaces nearly the way an S-mint coin from 1879-1882 would. The lovely toning mostly clings to the rims, keeping the central devices shimmering in their silvery brilliance. The surfaces are essentially without flaws, and as expected for the lofty grade designation, the eye appeal is SUPERB!
J. Colvin Randall sold this magnificent coin to J.M. Clapp in March 1894 (Randall likely bought this coin directly at the mint at the time of issue). Passing to John H. Clapp, this coin was purchased by Louis Eliasberg as part of the Clapp estate purchase brokered by Stack's in 1942. It sold in 2001 and placed in the Arno Collection. Arno was sold in the 2009 FUN Auction, and this coin realized $460,000 and placed into the Coronet Collection, the all time #1 PCGS Registry Set of Morgan Dollars. Appearing as lot 61 in our June 2015 Regency Sale, where it realized $446,500. We are proud to reoffer this AMAZING COIN in our Regency Auction XXIII. Coupled with the Vermeule-Coronet 1893-S, this is truly an historic offering!
PCGS 5, NGC 5, CAC 2. Only a single MS68 is finer, the famous Jack Lee coin that has not been seen since it sold in a November 2005 auction. To show the depth of the demand for high end examples of this date, four bidders brought a PCGS/CAC MS64 to $200,000 and two of them duked it out all the way to a final realization of $293,750 in our recent Regency Auction XXII; this one will certainly see very strong bidding as it presents a wonderful and important opportunity for any advanced Morgan dollar specialist--the opportunity to buy one of the absolute FINEST 92-S dollars that exist!
